TEACHERS – USEFUL TIPS AND THINGS TO FOCUS ON FOR YOUR ONLINE CLASSES
Help students a lot with pronunciation:
Word stress: show students where the stress is in the word. You can use bold or the apostrophe in Zoom (you can’t use bold in the Zoom chat option).
organisation, development, a product, a su’pplier
Word sounds: help students with vowel sounds when they get it wrong.
For example: “money” and “company” have the same vowel sound as “but, cup, nut…” We recommend doing it like this, with “pr” standing for “pronunciation”:
“Money” (pr: but, cup, nut….)
“Company” (pr: but, cup, nut….)
Or, you could write it out as you think students will understand it in their language. For example:
‘colleague (pr: ‘co leeeeeeeeg)
Connected speech: where possible, show students how word sounds often join together (consonant followed by vowel sound for example). This will help them with their listening skills too.
a couple of = a cou pa lov
How’s it going = how zit going
