5 great expressions for talking about a date!

Hi guys! And welcome to your Learn Hot English Lesson.

In this lesson, you’re going to learn 5 really great expressions for talking about a date.

You’re going to listen to Nate and Josh, and they’re talking about a blind date. Now, if you’re blind, you can’t see. A blind date is when you go out with someone you’ve never met before, just to see if you become friends, or perhaps something else. So, watch the conversation, and answer this one simple question: How well did the date go for Josh? Did it go well? Or did it go badly? So, and after that, we’ll look at the 5 expressions. OK, bye!

Conversation: The blind date

Nate: So, tell me, you had a blind date. What was it like?
Josh: Not a great one.
Nate: Not great. Oh, no.
Josh: So, first of all, I had a cold, so I wasn’t my, my usual jolly self.
Nate: OK.
Josh: As you can tell!
Nate: Yes.
Josh: But she turned up late, she didn’t apologise for being late, she knew she was late, so things kind of got off to a, to a bad start, and it was clear there was no…
Nate: No chemistry
Josh: Yeah, no chemistry.
Nate: Oh, no.
Josh: These things are always risky.
Nate: Yeah, of course. They’re always risky. What did she look like?
Josh: Well, she kind of looked like my mum.
Nate: Oh, no. That can’t be good.
Josh: I can’t fancy it’ll work.
Nate: Did your mum set up the date?
Josh: No, it was actually a, it was actually a cousin of mine. There seems to be some worry in the family that I’m not finding love. Maybe it’s my fault, maybe I’m too picky.
Nate: Well, what did you guys talk about?
Josh: Well, I didn’t talk about anything. She did not stop talking.
Nate: Oh, no.
Josh: I could not get a word in edgeways.
Nate: What did she talk about?
Josh: Well, she talked about her ex-boyfriend, she talked about how much she wanted to travel, she talked about why she’s a vegetarian…
Nate: OK.
Josh: All sorts of stuff, man.
Nate: Well, I have a new friend, I could introduce you to her.
Josh: I think I’m going to take a sabbatical to be honest. This has really put me off…
Nate: …OK, OK. I’ll check back with you in a couple of weeks.
Josh: If you’re ever free, let me know.
Nate: OK!

Andy again!
Hi, and welcome back. Now, we’re going to look at the 5 expressions that I think are really important and that you should learn. OK?

1. Turn up late

Josh said she “turned up late”. If someone turns up late, they arrive late.

2. We got off to a bad start

If you “get off to a bad start”, you start badly and it’s probably going to go on to become even worse after that.

3. There was no chemistry

OK, number 3, “There was no chemistry.” If there’s no chemistry, there’s no attraction, there’s no good feeling between you.

4. I’m too picky

Number 4, Josh said, “I’m too picky.” If you’re picky, nothing is good enough for you. You don’t like anything. Even if something’s particularly good, you still don’t want it because you’re really picky – you can’t pick anything.

5. I couldn’t get a word in edgeways

OK, and the last expression, number 5 is “I couldn’t get a word in edgeways.” If you can’t get a word in edgeways, someone is talking so much, you can’t say anything – you can’t even get a word in edgeways.

OK? So, there are 5 really great expressions for you to learn. And now, before you go, go to our blog, which you can see up there, and see if you can do our little test to see how much you can remember. OK? Bye!
